Stopwatch vs Timer — what's the difference?

A stopwatch counts up from zero and measures how long something takes. A timer counts down from a set duration and alerts you when time is up. Use a stopwatch when you're measuring an event; use a timer when you're limiting one.

oStopwatch focuses on doing one thing exceptionally well: counting up, with centisecond precision, with a lap function, in a design that stays completely out of your way.

Lap timer & split exports — how it works

The sub-dial at the bottom of the watch face mirrors how traditional sports chronographs operate: tap + LAP (or press L) to record an interval split. The sub-dial resets to zero to time your next segment, while the main timer keeps ticking total elapsed time without skipping a beat.

Every recorded lap appears in real time below the controls with split duration, cumulative total, and local time-of-day timestamps:

Watch Dial options

Customize the visual structure of your timer with three dedicated dial layouts. Switch between them anytime using the settings menu in the top bar:

Colour Scheme themes

oStopwatch ships with seven distinct colour schemes, each inspired by a tradition of precision instrument design. The Colour Scheme settings menu in the top bar switches between them instantly — your preference is remembered between visits:

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is oStopwatch?

oStopwatch uses Date.now() and requestAnimationFrame to update the display every ~16ms, with centisecond (1/100s) display precision. For sport, cooking, presentations, and most everyday use this is more than sufficient.

What browsers support Float mode (always on top)?

Float mode uses the modern Document Picture-in-Picture API supported in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Brave, and other modern Chromium desktop browsers. If your browser does not yet support Document PiP, you can still use Fullscreen mode (F) or snap your browser window side-by-side.

Can I use oStopwatch on a smartboard or projector?

Absolutely. Press F or click the Fullscreen icon to expand the stopwatch across the entire screen. The high-contrast sweep arc is calibrated for sharp distance viewing, and darker themes like Midnight or Cyan are especially striking on digital smartboards and projectors.

Does oStopwatch work on mobile?

Yes. The dial scales to any screen size. The controls are large enough to tap while moving. It works on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and all modern mobile browsers.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, the stopwatch runs entirely in your browser with no internet connection required. The JavaScript timer keeps ticking independently of the network.

Will refreshing the page lose my laps?

Yes — laps are held in memory during your session only. Refreshing or closing the tab resets everything. Note your times before navigating away.

Is my stopwatch and lap data private?

Yes, completely. oStopwatch runs 100% client-side in your web browser. No accounts or logins are required, and no session titles, lap times, or splits are ever transmitted to or stored on our servers. When you click 'CSV' or 'Copy', all processing is handled directly on your local device.
